Fire Win in Back and Forth Battle 6-5

July 28, 2010 - FAIRBANKS – Perseverance was the name of the game in the back and forth battle. Both teams showed up big, especially in the later parts of the game. The Fire scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, as they went on to win 6-5. The win goes to Chad Fromm as he came in relief for his last appearance on the year. The win improves the Fire’s record to 13-28 on the ABL season. The loss goes to the Bucs reliever Brandon Lodge, as the Bucs fall to 15-25 in ABL play. Ryan Mathews was the stand out on the night, as he went 3-4 on the night with three RBI and two run scored.

The Bucs jumped on the board early with a two runs in the top of the 1st inning. Justin Hopper reached base on a throwing error. Sean Sullivan then went first pitch swinging and drove the ball over left field wall for a two run homerun to give the Bucs the early 2-0 lead.

The Fire struck back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 1st inning. Aaron Parnell lined a double into the right field gap with one out. Parnell advanced to third on a fly out to right field off the bat of Cody Terry. Kellen Bozeman then recorded his sixteenth RBI of the season on an infield base hit to bring Parnell in to cut into the Bucs lead making it a 2-1 game.

The Fire came back in the bottom of the 4th inning to score two runs. Bozeman recorded his second hit of the game with a one out single into right field. Colby Everett then followed the single with a single of his own. The base hit advanced Bozeman to third, and Everett to second on the throw to third. Ryan Mathews then recorded RBI twenty and twenty-one with a two out two RBI single into right field. The two runs gave the Fire their first lead of the day at 3-2.

The Bucs bounced back with two runs of their own in the top half of the 5th inning. A leadoff single by Eddie Rohan got things going for the visiting team. Tony Piazza then went first pitch swinging and drove the second two run homerun in for the Bucs. The two run shot gave the Bucs the 4-3 advantage.

The Fire took advantage of a big error in the top of the 6th inning to tie the game. Ryan Mathews recorded his second hit of the game with a two out single into right field. Keith DePew recorded his first hit of the game to give the Fire runners on first and third. David Mitroff then hit a ground ball to the right side, but Su Wei Ta recorded the Bucs first error of the day, which allowed Mathews to come in to score to tie the game at 4-4.

The Bucs would not let up an inch as they came around to score another run in the top of the 8th inning. Chris Serritella came around to score to give the Bucs the 5-4 go-ahead run.

The Fire showed their perseverance in the bottom half of the 8th inning to respond to the lone run to score two of their own. Colby Everett led things off with a double down the left field line. Everett came around to score on another RBI single by Ryan Mathews, who also came around to score on a fielder’s choice to give the Fire the 6-5 advantage.

The Fire take the first game of the five game series. Game two will be tomorrow at 7 PM local time.
