Fire Win Big in Series Finale Against Miners

July 26, 2010 - FAIRBANKS – A seven run explosion in the 3rd inning helped the Fire take the series finale 10-4. Offense was the name of the game once more, as the final game produced another high scoring game. David Hawes proved give the best start of the series for the Fire going seven full innings pitched allowing four earned runs while striking out four. Hawes does record the win with his solid outing, as the Fire move to 12-28 in the ABL. The loss goes to the Miners starting pitcher Kirk Jewasko, who went two and two thirds innings pitched giving up five earned runs, as the Miners fall to 26-13 on the ABL season.

The Miners started off the scoring for the second straight game in the top of the 1st. Bret Schwartz, who has been hitting out of his mind (.433 avg. going into today), led off the inning with a base hit. A sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position, and Andy Mee record his thirty-fourth RBI of the season with a line drive to left to give the Miners the early 1-0 advantage.

The Fire bounced back in the bottom of the 2nd inning with two runs other their own to take the lead. Marc Schoch led off the inning with a base hit into left field. Colby Everett followed up the base hit with his first homerun of the season. The two-run bomb over the left field wall gave the Fire the early 2-1 lead.

The Fire would not look back after taking the early lead, as they would put up a seven spot in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Cody Terry got things rolling with a one out single to left field. A single off the bat of Kellen Bozeman put runners on first and second. Jewasko went on to load the bases when he walked Will Watson. Colby Everett then lined a two out two RBI single into center field. Ryan Mathews then struck out, but advanced to first base on a passed ball by the catcher Wesley Thigpen. The bases then remained loaded for Keith DePew who reached base on an infield single down the third base line, and recorded an RBI on the play. Ty Windall also recorded another RBI when he was walked with the bases still loaded. The fifth run of the inning scored on an Aaron Parnell infield RBI single. The last of the scoring crossed the plate when Cody Terry lined a two RBI shot through the left side to give the Fire the 9-1 advantage.

The Miners crawled back in the top of the 7th inning to make the came a little interesting. Back-to-back singles started off the inning. A two RBI single off the bat of Matt Wessinger brought in the first of three that would come across to score. Wessinger came in to score on an RBI double off the bat of Andy Mee, who leads the ABL in the RBI category with thirty-five. The three runs cut into the Fire lead to make a 9-4 game.

Aaron Parnell would quiet any doubts with a leadoff solo homerun in the bottom of the 8th inning. The homerun was the Fire’s second of the game, and Parnell’s third of the season. The last run for the Fire would put the icing on the cake to solidify the 10-4 victory. The Fire will have a day off tomorrow and begin the last series of the summer when they play the Anchorage Bucs Wednesday night at 7 PM local time.
